Work continues on parcel tax proposed for Palo Alto
PALO ALTO -- School Officials in Palo Alto continue to work on an increse to current parcel taxed to combat state budget cuts to education. Palo Alto Unified officials have agreed on the groundwork for a $96 increase in tax per parcel, in hopes of countering the drop in school funding from the state and other sources.
The school board is expected to discuss the proposed change and decide on a ballot date in their December meetings.
Officials say the increase would last for six years, and would bring the total tax per parcle up to $589. Proponents say the $96 is modest in the face of the recession, and would bring the district $174 more per student in the coming years.
The district reports a $460 per student drop in revenue this past year.
