JERUSALEM -- A facility run by Santa Clara-based Intel in Jerusalem was the scene of a massive protest Saturday. This was the second such protest at Intel's facility, which is near a religious neighborhood in the holy city.
At issue was Intel continuing to operate on the Jewish Sabbath. As it is forbidden for religious Jews to work between sundown Friday and Saturday night, many businesses in Jerusalem shut down during this time. The protest took place even though Intel agreed to not have Jewish employees work on Saturday.
According to Jerusalem police, there were 3,000 ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters present. The protesters chanted "Shabbes! Shabbes!" - the Yiddish word for Sabbath - and yelled abuse at police.
