Mercury News focusing on enhanced footage of police beating
SAN JOSE -- The Mercury News is again focusing on the police beating of a San Jose State math student today, releasing what it describes as enhanced footage of the incident.
In an audio clip taken from the recording, we hear the police officers ordering the student, Phong Ho, to roll over on his stomach. One officer then shoots him with a Taser, after Ho asks for his glasses.
The Mercury News commissioned an forensic expert to enhance the grainy footage of the September incident, which was captured on a cell phone by one of Ho's roommates.
The newspaper printeded a transcript of the grainy and sometimes confusing video, concluding that one of the officers said on tape that he wanted to punch Ho in the mouth.
The officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave.
Mayor Chuck Reed is calling for increased scrutiny of the police.
At their meeting today, the Public Safety Commission will talk about setting up new review guidelines for the police department's use of force.
