Green monkey rumor keeps some parents from vaccinating kids for H1N1

SAN JOSE -- Nurses at the San Jose Unified School District began vaccinating children this week for the H1N1 virus, but admit that a strange rumor has scared some of the district's parents into not getting their kids vaccinated.

The rumor is that the "swine flu" vaccine was derived from the genes of African green monkeys. It's believed by some that those moneys were the original source of the HIV virus.

At Lowell Elementary School, just 52 percent of parents agreed to get their kids vaccinated through the district's free vaccination program.

The remaining 48 percent either already had their kids vaccinated, forgot to sign the paperwork, or had concerns about the vaccine's safety..

San Jose Unified is offering free H1N1 vaccinations to all 32,000 students in the district.
