Surprise: Gilroy briefly gets first medical marijuana dispensary
GILROY -- Gilroy's first-ever medical marijuana dispensary quietly opened this week, without a business license, city permits or permission from the City Council.
The dispensary claims its a nonprofit, so it doesn't need to get city approval to operate.
Gilroy officials disagree, and are issuing the dispensary a "cease and desist" order this week.
Under advice from their lawyer, MediLeaf rented a retail location on First Street, renovated the interior and opened for business -- all without the city's knowledge.
Council members had originally rejected MediLeaf's business license, saying they needed several more months to work out an ordinance regulating medical marijuana in their city.
