Alternative education program created in Sunnyvale

SUNNYVALE -- An elementary school in Sunnyvale is the new home of a alternative education program for children in grades kindergarten through 3rd. Both the school district and parents combined efforts to make the program a reality.

After many meetings since last spring, parents and district administrators were able create the new program that adds a hands-on aspect to learning that will go with traditional textbook based curriculums. For example, students could pick vegetables from a garden and weigh and measure them for a math lesson, and at the same time learn about sustainability.

The new program will consist of up to four classrooms at Fairwood Elementary School and that could grow if the program is successful. Another benefit to the program is its low cost.
