High-speed rail could get $4 billion federal boost
SILICON VALLEY -- California's high-speed rail line from the Bay Area to Los Angeles could be getting a $4 billion boost in federal stimulus money.
As much as $8 billion in stimulus funding has been earmarked for high-speed rail projects across the country, with just one condition -- construction must begin by 2012.
That condition might prove difficult for the line's San Francisco-to-San Jose portion, which remains entangled in a fight with Palo Alto and Atherton over the train's environmental impact.
That stimulus money could instead go to other stretches of the 800-mile line, such as the Anaheim-to-Los Angeles portion.
California's deadline to turn in the federal high-speed rail stimulus application is June 17.
