PALO ALTO -- The city of Palo Alto is getting hit with a lawsuit, just weeks after city council members voted to ban all plastic bags in the city's grocery stores.
The plastic bag industry swept in and sued the city this week, saying it failed to perform a detailed environmental analysis of their plan, arguing the city never took into account the harmful environmental effects of paper bags and reusable bags.
As legislators debate future, wide-scale bans on plastic bags, the lawsuit in Palo Alto should give them a taste of the kind of legal battles they'll face from the industry.
The group suing Palo Alto, which calls itself the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, has successfully sued the southern California city of Manhattan Beach (Google Map) in a similar case, forcing the city to temporarily shelve its ban on plastic bags.
