Sabotage Suspected in Santa Clara County Phone Outage
SAN JOSE -- Verizon (NYSE:VZ) suffered a massive outage in southern Santa Clara, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties early Thursday morning that authorities suspect may have been sabotage.
San Jose police investigators are looking down a manhole near the intersection of Blossom Hill and Monterey roads where phone company workers found four cut fiber optic lines, according to police department spokesman Ronnie Lopez.
Sporadic phone outages in the affected areas are expected to continue until at least 6 p.m., Lopez said.
The San Jose Police Department has satuarated the south San Jose area with officers so people without phone service can more easily locate one in an emergency.
Emergency dispatchers are encouraging people who need help to drive to their local police or fire departments if they're unable to reach 911.
