GILROY WILL HAVE FIREWORKS IN 2009

Gilroy - The July 4th fireworks show in Gilroy will return in 2009 now that the city council has voted to restore the $13,000 in funding for the extravaganza that they cut earlier this year.

July 4th fireworks shows need to be booked almost a year in advance so if the council had not restored the funding then the skies above Gilroy High School would have been quiet next July 4th for the first time in more than 30 years.

The council had cut the funding for the show as part of the $4.5 million in spending cuts they made to close the city's budget deficit.

Mayor Al Pinheiro was the sole 'no' vote to restore the fireworks.

He said that with 23 unfilled city positions being frozen because of the budget shortfall and numerous cuts elsewhere the city could not afford to fund fireworks.
