Local court system could lose millions

SAN JOSE -- Santa Clara County's court system is looking at losing almost $7 million in funding this year. This comes as a result of budget cuts made to the state's judicial system by the Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown.

The decrease is expected to cause delays to plans to build a new family courthouse. County court system CEO David Yamasaki says $130 million was diverted from a statewide court construction fund this year to help pay for court operations and that could put San Jose's project in jeopardy.

Yamasaki says this is the latest in a series of budget cuts that the courts have had to deal with in recent years. He adds that the $7 million amount for this year could be more than doubled in next year's budget.
