iSuppli: iPhone teardown reveals unit cost

SILICON VALLEY -- New estimates today on how much it costs to build the new iPhone 3GS.

Researchers at industry analyst iSuppli took apart a new iPhone 3GS this week, studied its parts and estimated it likely costs Apple $179 to produce.

That's about $5 more than the iPhone 3G.

Apple has already moved more than a million 3GS's, after less than two weeks on the market.

While Apple may not make a lot of money on the iPhone's hardware, it pulls in profits from sales of millions of MP3s and iPhone applications every single day.

Meanwhile, Apple is apparently running out of the new iPhone.

The company recently created a site designed to update people on the retail availability of the new iPhone 3GS.

Just three stores in California are fully stocked with the new iPhone -- Los Angeles, San Francisco and Palo Alto.

Here in Silicon Valley, the Apple stores in Los Gatos, the Stanford Shopping Center, Oakridge Mall and Valley Fair are all experiencing iPhone shortages.

The site indicates Valley Fair is completely sold out of the new phone.
