San Jose sends $62 million to state

SAN JOSE -- A $62-million dollar check will be making its way from the City of San Jose to the State of California. The money comes from the funds of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency.

California's government has been raiding city funds across the state to help deal with its budget deficit. Legal attempts to block the state from taking the money from the communities have been unsuccessful although a lawsuit is still pending.

Mayor Chuck Reed talked about having to send the money to Sacramento during a study session for the City's budget. Mayor Reed says the check was written "under protest" and that it was "a bad day for us." He also said it was a bad day for the state, because it's another example of the state's failure to handle its budget problem. "It trickled down to us. In this case, it's much more than a trickle. It's a flood."
