PUSH FOR NON-SMOKING APARTMENTS TAKES ANOTHER STEP

Several cities throughout the state have adopted smoke free housing regulations and now San Jose may join the list. The San Jose City Council Rules Committee has looked over a proposal to make all new multi-unit housing complexes, namely condos and apartments, smoke free.

At the committee meeting, there were a series of statistics presented that show that second-hand cigarette smoke is generally not filtered from apartment and condominium ventilation systems. According to the information, this would increase the chances that non-smoking neighbors are breathing second hand contaminants from people who smoke down the hall.

City Councilmember Forrest Williams is the author of the proposal. He says that as a community, those who are in the market of selling housing should be doing all that can be done to improve the health of all residents to create a safe environment.

The proposal will now go to the City Council.
