SAN JOSE -- One person died after being struck by a VTA Light Rail train Thursday afternoon.
According to Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority spokesperson Jennie Loft, the accident occurred around 3:45pm at the Fruitdale Station at the intersection of Southwest Expressway and Leigh Avenue.The victim has been described as a teenage hispanic male, but his identity has not been released.
According to San Jose Police Sergeant Ronnie Lopez, the victim was riding a scooter on Leigh Avenue and ignored the warning signal. He went under the crossing arms and was struck.
The intersection was shut down during the investigation, snarling traffic coming from Northbound 280 during the afternoon commute. Traffic control was also put in place to create a detour at the intersection of Southwest Expressway and Fruitdale Avenue.
22 passengers were reportedly on the light rail train when the accident happened. A bus bridge was put in place to ferry passengers between the Bascom and Race Stations.
