County settles wrongful death lawsuit over deputy crash
SANTA CLARA COUNTY -- Santa Clara County has reached a settlement with the family of one of the victims in a 2008 crash involving a patrol car driven by a sheriff's deputy.
The county agreed to pay $2.3 million to the parents of Matt Peterson who was one of the two bicyclists killed when former Deputy James Council's Patrol car struck them in the Cupertino Hills last year.
There are still two ongoing civil suits stemming from the March 2008 crash.
Council, who fell asleep at the wheel before striking the victims, was sentenced to four months house arrest and 20 months of community service after pleading guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
