Palo Alto - A program offered at the Palo Alto VA hospital is using donated bicycles to help veterans from Afghanistan, Iraq and other conflicts recover from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The veterans in the 60 to 90 day trauma recovery program take one hour bike rides three times a week and a monthly weekend group ride.
VA officials established the program based on research that suggests physical activity and exercise can have a powerful positive impact on post traumatic stress and depression.
While more than 150 veterans were participating in the program, as of May, there remains a waiting list to get in to it. Hospital officials say bicycle donations are being eagerly accepted.
